Data Definitions
$M:  Dollars in millions, year to date, awarded during the specified fiscal year(s).
Award:  New, supplemental funding (existing award and end date does not change), or continuation funding (existing award and project end date is extended); year to date, awarded during the specified fiscal year.
Department/Center:  Academic departments are involved in education and research related to a specific field or fields of study. Discipline-related departments are grouped into schools. Centers are a multi-purpose unit that can be organized at either the university or school level fopr the purpose of supporting research, education, outreach, or other activities considered appropriate to the needs and interests of the institution.
Expenditure:  Sponsored research expenditures are from sponsored research awards. Sponsored activity expenditures are from sponsored activity awards.
Fiscal Year:  July 1 through June 30th of a given year (e.g. Fiscal Year 2020 is July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020).
Proposal:  A sponsored research proposal has a submit date and a purpose of either research or student support in the Grants Management System. A sponsored activity proposal has a submit date and purpose of membership, fellowship, service, equipment, or other in the PeopleSoft Grants Management System.
Sponsored Activity:  Activities that fall under the fund number 378. A sponsored activity that is related to educational activities, training, travel grants, memberships, symposiums, or analytical services.
Sponsored Research:  Any grant, contract, agreement, or similar arrangement between the University and a private or governmental sponsor furnishing funds, equipment, or other resources to support research, the creation of a creative work, or any other educational or scientific projects to be performed by one or more members of the University that may result in the creation of intellectual property. This includes projects that fall under the fund numbers 375, 394, 395.
Sponsor:  Any private, federal, or state agency that is furnishing funds, equipment, or other resources to support research, the creation of a creative work, or any other educational or scientific research/acivity.
Foundation Gifts:  A gift of funds from university foundation to support research at the university with no requirements to provide the sponsor with deliverables (ie: progress, final reports, or other forms of intellectual property)
Foundation Awards:  A gift of funds from university foundation to support research at the university that requires PI to provide the sponsor with deliverables (ie: progress, final reports, or other forms of intellectual property)
Fund Code 375:  Sponsored research funding which can be sourced from federal or state government and private organizations or industry
Fund Code 378:  Sponsored programs, center membership support, education sourced from federal or state government and private organizations or industry
Fund Code 394:  Funding sourced from foundation gifts to support research activities within the university
Fund Code 395:  Funding sourced from federal or state government and private organizations or industry for equipment purchases needed for research purposes
Fund Code:  Fund Codes (3-digit) are used for external sponsored research. These are non-fund 100 accounts which are continual and roll across fiscal years
